VAT Review for a Global Chemicals and Energy Group

Savings: R100m / €5m / £4.1m)

Client Overview

A multinational chemicals and energy group with operations in 32 countries and a workforce of over 30,000 employees. The business is engaged in the production and marketing of liquid fuels, petrochemicals, and electricity, with a strategic focus on natural gas.

The Challenge

Given the scale and complexity of its operations—spanning numerous subsidiaries and joint ventures-the group required an experienced VAT partner to conduct a comprehensive review of historical VAT processing across 15 legal entities.

Our Approach & Results

Using proprietary analytics methodologies, we identified various anomalies and inefficiencies in VAT processing. The review revealed inconsistencies in the treatment of many recurring, high-value supplier transactions. As a result, the group successfully recovered over R100 million (approximately €5 million/ £4.1 million) in unclaimed VAT. Beyond the financial impact, the engagement delivered lasting value by:

  • Enhancing internal VAT controls
  • Reducing long-term compliance risk
  • Optimising VAT treatment across key business units
